RESOLUTION
 
 
WHEREAS, John W. Baird has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of ninety-eight; and
 
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
 
WHEREAS, John W. Baird was the loving husband for sixty-five years of the late Marian; and
 
WHEREAS, John W. Baird was the much-adored father of Stephen, Wyllys, Orrin and Katharine, the grandfather of seven and the great-grandfather of three to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
 
WHEREAS, A native of Evanston, John W. Baird graduated from Wesleyan University and earned a master's degree in business from Harvard University; and
 
WHEREAS, During World War II, John W. Baird served his country as a Captain in the United States Army; and
 
WHEREAS, In 1946 John W. Baird joined the family's real estate company, Baird & Warner, and in 1963 succeeded his father as President; and
 
WHEREAS, John W. Baird headed Baird & Warner for decades and enjoyed a long and highly successful career as a real estate developer; and
 
WHEREAS, As leader of the Metropolitan Housing and Planning Council from 1959 to 1963, John W. Baird was an advocate for fair housing and championed open space conservation; and
 
WHEREAS, John W. Baird was a member of the Commission on Chicago Landmarks for forty years; and
 
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of John W. Baird serve as an example to all; and
 
WHEREAS, John W. Baird will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
 
 
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, John W. Baird imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
 
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this fifteenth day of January, 2014, do hereby commemorate John W. Baird for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of John W. Baird.
