RESOLUTION
 
 
WHEREAS, Ruth Horwich has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 94; and
 
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
 
WHEREAS, A longtime resident of the Kenwood community, Ruth Horwich was the loving wife for 41 years of the late Leonard; and
 
WHEREAS, Ruth Horwich was the much-adored mother of Barbara, Ann, William and Jonathan, the grandmother of three and the great-grandmother of four; and
 
WHEREAS, Ruth Horwich and her husband supported and nurtured the talents of countless young local artists; and
 
WHEREAS, Ruth and Leonard Horwich were art collectors who donated or loaned major works of art to the Smart Museum at the University of Chicago, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum of Contemporary Art; and
 
WHEREAS, The couple's most visible contribution to Chicago was the donation of the Jean Dubuffet sculpture, "Monument with a Standing Beast," which can be found in the plaza in front of the James R. Thompson Center; and
 
WHEREAS, An icon in Chicago's arts community, Ruth Horwich chaired the board for 40 years of the Hyde Park Art Center and was a founding member of the Museum of Contemporary Art; and
 
WHEREAS, Ruth Horwich also served on the boards of the Poetry Foundation, the Institute of Design, Victory Gardens Theater and the Chicago Cultural Center Foundation; and
 
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Ruth Horwich serve as an example to all; and
 
 
WHEREAS, A woman of dignity, grace and charm, Ruth Horwich will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her many relatives, friends and admirers; and
 
WHEREAS, To her beloved family, Ruth Horwich imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
 
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this tenth day of September, 2014, do hereby commemorate Ruth Horwich for her grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to her family; and
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented tprifhe family of Ruth Horwich.
