RESOLUTION

 

 

WHEREAS, The Reverend Johnnie Colemon. has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 94; and

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

 

WHEREAS, The Reverend Johnnie Colemon was a widely admired religious leader and the Founder of Christ Universal Temple on the South Side; and

 

WHEREAS, Born and raised in Columbus, Mississippi, the Reverend Johnnie Colemon moved to Chicago and worked as a teacher in the Chicago Public Schools; and

 

WHEREAS, The Reverend Johnnie Colemon was ordained a minister in 1956, the same year she founded her church which began with just a small membership; and

 

WHEREAS, The Reverend Johnnie Colemon went on to build three new churches, an institute and an academy; and

 

WHEREAS, The church, situated on a 100-acre campus at 119th Street and Ashland Avenue, grew to become one of the largest religious congregations in Chicago; and

 

WHEREAS, Under the guidance of the Reverend Johnnie Colemon, the funeral for Chicago Mayor Harold Washington was held, at Christ Universal Temple in 1987; and

 

WHEREAS, Following a lifetime devoted to tending to the spiritual needs of others through her ministry, the Reverend Johnnie Colemon retired as the Senior Minister of the church in 2006; and

 

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Reverend Johnnie Colemon serve as an example to all; and

 

WHEREAS, Her love pf life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared the Reverend Johnnie Colemon to her family members, friends and all who knew her, and enabled her to enrich their lives in>ways they will never forget; and

 

 

WHEREAS, To her beloved family, the Reverend Johnnie Colemon imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-first day of January, 2015, do hereby commemorate the Reverend Johnnie Colemon for her grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to her family; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of the Reverend Johnnie CoLernon.
