CONGRATULATIONS EXTENDED TO ARNSTEIN & LEHR LLP ON CELEBRATING THEIR
ONE HUNDRED TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY

WHEREAS, This year marks the one hundred twentieth anniversary of the Chicago law firm Arnstein and Lehr LLP; and

WHEREAS, The City Council has been informed of this special occasion by the Honorable Margaret Laurino, Alderman ofthe 39th Ward; and
WHEREAS, In 1893 two young attorneys, Albert Loeb and Sidney Adler, formed a partnership, specializing in corporate and real estate law with offices in the Chamber of Commerce Building, in the rapidly developing Loop, on the southeast corner of LaSalle and Washington; and

WHEREAS, In 1895, Richard Sears invited Julius Rosenwald and Aaron Nussbaum to become partners in a small retail merchandise company operated by Mr. Sears. Legend has it that Nussbaum and Sears tried unsuccessfully to locate their lawyer early one Saturday morning. Seeing a light on in the office of Loeb and Adler, they were retained to draft the reorganization documents, which are displayed on the firm's walls, creating and incorporating Sear, Roebuck and Company. Sears was the first of many major corporations represented by the firm. The relationship between Sears Holding Corporation and Arnstein and Lehr is possibly the longest attorney-client relationship in the United States. Representing a broad range of large corporations, mid-size and small businesses in manufacturing, retail, industrial, service sectors, estate planning and various other personal needs of individuals, the firm expanded to include virtually all areas of law. Based in Chicago, the firm expanded to include offices in Miami, Tampa, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach and satellite offices in Springfield, Illinois and Boca Raton, Florida; and

WHEREAS, The firm played leading roles in matters as diverse as the construction, in the 1970s, of the Sears Tower and litigation arising from alleged dumping in the consumer electronics industry in the 1980s. Sigmund Livingston, a former partner, founded the Anti-Defamation League in 1913 and J. Hamilton Lewis who was the first Senator to hold the title of Whip, worked at the firm between terms in the 1920s; and

WHEREAS, Through nine decades the firm did business under more than a dozen names, until it became Arnstein & Lehr, with Leo Arnstein, who was with the firm until his death at the age of eight-six and Lou Lehr, who is retiring at the end of 2013; now, therefore;

Be It Resolved, That we, the Mayor and the members of the City Council of Chicago gathered here this eleventh day of December 2013, do hereby congratulate Arnstein & Lehr LLP and extend our best wishes for continuing success; and
