RESOLUTION

 

WHEREAS, Martyi Reinsdorf has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 85; and

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

 

WHEREAS, Martyi is survived by her husband, Bulls and White Sox Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf, and was the proud mother to her daughter, Susan, sons David (deceased), Michael (Nancy) and Jonathan (Holly), and was grandmother to nine; and

 

WHEREAS, Martyi was born in Denver, Colorado on March 4,1936 to Milton and Vivette (Ravel) Rifkin; and

 

WHEREAS, Martyi and her family moved to Chicago, IL in 1944 where she attended Sutherland Elementary School and Morgan Park High School before majoring in Japanese and Chinese History at George Washington University ("GW'); and

 

WHEREAS, She met Jerry at GW, and the couple were married in 1956; and

 

WHEREAS, She worked for the Defense Department at the Pentagon and later for the Department of Agriculture when the couple moved to Chicago; and

 

WHEREAS, An acclaimed fine arts creator of colorful Cloisonne jewelry, Martyi designed five ofthe six Bulls NBA Championship rings and designed the White Sox World Series championship ring in 2005; and

 

WHEREAS, Martyi created and distributed more than 1 million care packages including coloring books, crayons, markers and toys to hospitals, orphanages and shelters, including to survivors of Hurricane Katrina, residents of Ronald McDonald Houses, patients at Lurie Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago and Phoenix Children's Hospital and young vision-impaired patients at The Spectrios Institute for Low Vision; and

 

WHEREAS, Martyi and her husband supported many charities in Chicago, Phoenix, Israel and across the world; and

 

WHEREAS, She was a recipient of the 2004 Clarence Troyer Volunteer ofthe Year Award and was recognized in 2011 by American Friends of Hebrew University with the Torch of Learning Award; and

 

WHEREAS, To her beloved family, Martyi Reinsdorf imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

 

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-first day of July, 2021, do hereby commemorate Martyi Reinsdorf for her grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to her family; and
