RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Amelia Boynton Robinson has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 104; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, A native of Savannah, Georgia, Amelia Boynton Robinson was a legendary civil rights activist; and
WHEREAS, Amelia Boynton Robinson was among those beaten while attempting to march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama in 1965; and
WHEREAS, Amelia Boynton Robinson was clubbed in the neck and beaten unconscious as Alabama state troopers and a sheriffs posse tear-gassed and brutally attacked the peaceful demonstrators; and
WHEREAS, A newspaper photograph of a badly injured Amelia Boynton Robinson drew national attention and became a symbol of the sacrifices made by so many during the civil rights movement; and
WHEREAS, Fifty years after the "Bloody Sunday" march, President Barack Obama held Amelia Boynton Robinson's hand as she was pushed in a wheelchair across the bridge during an event marking its 50th anniversary; and
WHEREAS, A key figure in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, Amelia Boynton Robinson was a fearless and dedicated champion of the civil rights movement whose courage sustained its growth and success; and
WHEREAS, A 1927 graduate of Tuskegee University, Amelia Boynton Robinson donated much of her memorabilia to the school; and
WHEREAS, The bravery, sacrifice and determination of Amelia Boynton Robinson serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, Amelia Boynton^ Robinson will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To her beloved family, Amelia Boynton Robinson imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
