RESOLUTION
 
 
WHEREAS, Dr. Steve Whitman has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 71; and
 
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Aldermen Edward M. Burke and Roberto Maldonado; and
 
WHEREAS, A resident of the Humboldt Park community, Dr. Steve Whitman was a renowned epidemiologist and the loving husband for more than 30 years of Nancy Kurshan; and
 
WHEREAS, Dr. Steve Whitman was the much-adored father of Imani, Rosa and Michael, the beloved grandfather of two, and the dear brother of Hollis; and
 
WHEREAS, A native of Brooklyn, New York, Dr. Steve Whitman attended the City College of New York and earned a doctorate in biostatistics from Yale University; and
 
WHEREAS, An icon in the field of public health, Dr. Steve Whitman was a committed advocate for social justice and battled racism in all forms; and
 
WHEREAS, Dr. Steve Whitman ably served for 10 years as Deputy Commissioner of the Chicago Department of Health under former Mayor Richard M. Daley; and
 
WHEREAS, Dr. Steve Whitman was widely respected for his pioneering work which exposed the racial disparities of health care in Chicago, particularly in regard to breast cancer mortality; and
 
WHEREAS, After concluding his esteemed tenure in the public sector, Dr. Steve Whitman became the Founding Director of the Sinai Urban Health Institute at Mt. Sinai Medical Center, which developed into a leading center for public health and health disparity research; and
 
WHEREAS, Dr. Steve Whitman helped launch the Metropolitan Chicago Breast Cancer Task Force; and
 
WHEREAS, Generous, humble, nurturing and playful, Dr. Steve Whitman enjoyed reading and spending time in Union Pier, Michigan and Sanibel Island, Florida; and
 
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Dr. Steve Whitman serve as an example to all; and
 
WHEREAS, Dr. Steve Whitman will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
 
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Dr. Steve Whitman imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
 
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this thirtieth day of July, 2014, d o hereby commemorate Dr. Steve Whitman for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Dr. Steve Whitman.
