RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Honorable E. Clay Shaw, Jr. has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of seventy-four; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, A widely admired Florida politician, the Honorable E. Clay Shaw, Jr. was the loving and devoted husband for fifty-three years of Emilie; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable E. Clay Shaw, Jr. was the beloved father of Emilie, Jennifer, E. Clay Shaw, III and John Charles Shaw and the grandfather of fifteen to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable E. Clay Shaw, Jr. earned his bachelor's and law degrees from Stetson. University and a master's in business administration from the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable E. Clay Shaw, Jr. had a long and distinguished career in Fort Lauderdale politics, serving as an Assistant City Attorney, Chief City Prosecutor, Associate Municipal Judge, City Commissioner, Vice-Mayor and finally Mayor of that municipality; and
WHEREAS, After serving as Mayor of Fort Lauderdale from 1975 to 1981, the Honorable E. Clay Shaw, Jr. won election to the United States Congress as a Representative from Florida's 12th District; and
WHEREAS, During his twenty-six years in Congress, the Honorable E. Clay Shaw, Jr. won a well-deserved reputation as a genteel and effective lawmaker who played a key role in enacting landmark welfare reform legislation; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable E. Clay Shaw, Jr. touched the lives of many with his integrity, wisdom and devotion to public service; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Honorable E. Clay Shaw, Jr. serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared the Honorable E. Clay Shaw, Jr. to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, the Honorable E. Clay Shaw, Jr. imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this sixteenth day of October, 2013, do hereby commemorate the Honorable E. Clay Shaw, Jr. for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of the Honorable E. Clay Shaw, Jr.
