RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Honorable Rudy Clay has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of seventy-seven; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Rudy Clay was a former Mayor of Gary, Indiana and the loving husband for fifty-five years of Christine, nee Swan; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Rudy Clay was the much-adored father of Rudolph, Jr., to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Rudy Clay was raised by his two aunts, Lucy Hunter and Daisy Washington, after his mother's untimely death and attended Indiana University in Bloomington; and
WHEREAS, After serving his country in the United States Army, the Honorable Rudy Clay worked as an insurance agent for Prudential and State Farm before opening the Rudolph Clay Insurance Agency in Gary; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Rudy Clay was a leader in the civil rights movement during the 1960s and marched with the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Rudy Clay enjoyed a four-decade long career in public service and was known for his flamboyant style, easy going manner and skill as a consummate campaigner; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Rudy Clay served in the Indiana Senate and became the first African-American elected as County Recorder and County Commissioner in Indiana; and
WHEREAS, In addition to his role as Mayor, the Honorable Rudy Clay was a Lake County Councilman and Chairman of the Gary Democratic Precinct Organization; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Honorable Rudy Clay serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Rudy Clay will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, the Honorable Rudy Clay imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-sixth day of June, 2013, do hereby commemorate the Honorable Rudy Clay for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of the Honorable Rudy Clay. y
