RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, William J. McCarter has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of eighty-one; and
WHEREAS, The City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, William J. McCarter was a prominent broadcasting executive and the loving and devoted husband of the late Linda; and
WHEREAS, William J. McCarter was the much-adored father of Amy, Juli, and Max, to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities which he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, William J. McCarter was the beloved grandfather of three grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, William J. McCarter served as President and CEO of Window to the World Communications, Inc., which included Chicago's WTTW and WFMT-FM stations; and
WHEREAS, Under the direction of William J. McCarter, WTTW became the most watched public television station in the country, and together with WFMT earned twelve Peabody awards, five DuPont Columbia Journalism Awards, and one hundred-fifty regional Emmy Awards; and
WHEREAS, William J. McCarter believed in thoughtful and meaningful programming which promoted enlightened conversation and spirited debate; and
WHEREAS, A proponent of the arts, William J. McCarter created such musical experiences as "Soundstage" and introduced Americans to renowned film critics Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel; and
WHEREAS, William J. McCarter created a television legacy which continues to impact public television audiences in and beyond Chicago; and
 
WHEREAS, William J. McCarter will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and colleagues; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, William J. McCarter imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this fourth day of May, 2011, do hereby commemorate William J. McCarter for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of William J. McCarter.
