RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, John J. Wilpers, Jr., has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of ninety-three; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, John J. Wilpers, Jr., was a distinguished veteran of military and government intelligence services and the loving husband of the late Marian; and
WHEREAS, John J. Wilpers, Jr., was the much-adored father of John III, Michael, Helen, Teresa and Mary and the much-adored grandfather of seven to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, John J. Wilpers, Jr., was the last-known surviving member of the team of Army intelligence officers who captured former Japanese Prime Minister Hideki Tojo nine days after Japan surrendered in World War II; and
WHEREAS, John J. Wilpers, Jr., worked for the Central Intelligence Agency for twenty-eight years following his military service; and
WHEREAS, During his tenure at the CIA, John J. Wilpers, Jr., specialized in gathering biographical information on Soviet and Chinese scientists and supervised translators for American information agencies in Europe; and
WHEREAS, Following a long and highly successful career, John J. Wilpers, Jr., retired in 1975; and
WHEREAS, Pentagon officials belatedly awarded John J. Wilpers, Jr., with the Bronze Star in 2010 for his part in apprehending Tojo; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of John J. Wilpers, Jr., serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, John J. Wilpers, Jr., imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this thirteenth day of March, 2013, do hereby commemorate John J. Wilpers, Jr., for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of John J. Wilpers, Jr.
