RESOLUTION

 

 

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Marian Bergeson has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 90; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, A resident of Newport Beach, California, the Honorable Marian Bergeson was a widely admired public servant and the loving wife of Garth; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Marian Bergeson was the much-adored mother of Nancy, Garth Jr., Julie and James and the grandmother of eleven to whom she imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that she possessed in abundance; and

WHEREAS, Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, the Honorable Marian Bergeson graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in elementary education; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Marian Bergeson was elected to the State Assembly in 1978 and served three terms before winning her Senate seat in 1984 as one of the first two Republican women elected to California's Senate; and

WHEREAS, In 1994 the Honorable Marian Bergeson became a member of the Orange County Board of Supervisors and served until 1996 when she was appointed by Governor Pete Wilson as California Secretary of Education; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Marian Bergeson was subsequently appointed to the California State Board of Education; and

WHEREAS, In addition to her professional achievements, the Honorable Marian Bergeson was instrumental in helping Orange County women run for public office; and

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Honorable Marian Bergeson serve as an example to all; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Marian Bergeson was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her many relatives, friends and admirers; and

WHEREAS, To her beloved family, the Honorable Marian Bergeson imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

 

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twentieth day of July, 2016, do hereby commemorate the Honorable Marian Bergeson for her grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences for her family; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of the Honorable Marian Bergeson.
