RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Saint Rita of Cascia Catholic Church in Chicago will celebrate its 110th Anniversary at a special event on October 17, 2015, which will also honor the 75th Jubilee Year of the Province of Our Mother of Good Counsel; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this dual event by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Canonized by Pope Leo XIII, Saint Rita of Cascia was an Italian Augustinian nun who is called the "Patron Saint of the Impossible"; and
WHEREAS, In 1905 Archbishop James E. Quigley invited the Order of St. Augustine to Chicago to establish a presence on the sparsely populated Southwest Side; and
WHEREAS, A five-acre tract of land was purchased on 63rd Street between Oakley and Claremont Avenues and construction soon began on a chapel, monastery and school; and
WHEREAS, By 1911, with the parish increasing in growth every year, there was need for a larger church and school which resulted in the purchase of another tract of land, at 63rd and Fairfield and 62nd and Washtenaw, where the present day parish is located; and
WHEREAS, Over the ensuing decades, the parish continued to replace the church and school with larger buildings as the neighborhood rapidly developed; and
WHEREAS, In 1950 Samuel Cardinal Stritch dedicated what is now the current church, a Romanesque style structure, and praised it as "magnificent in its simplicity"; and
WHEREAS, During its long and rich history, Saint Rita of Cascia Catholic Church has fostered a deep sense of faith and community in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the religious of Saint Rita of Cascia Catholic Church serve as an example to all; now, therefore

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this fourteenth day of October 2015, do hereby congratulate Saint Rita of Cascia Catholic Church on its 110th Anniversary and the 75th Jubilee Year of the Province of Our Mother of Good; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the Reverend Tony Pizzo, Pastor of Saint Rita of Cascia Catholic Church.
