RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Honorable George Hansen has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 83; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable George Hansen was a former Congressman from the State of Idaho and the loving husband of the late Connie; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable George Hansen was the much-adored father of five children to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, A native of Tetania, Idaho, the Honorable George Hansen graduated from Ricks College and did graduate work at Idaho State University; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable George Hansen served in the United States Air Force from 1951 to 1954 and in the United States Naval Reserve from 1964 to 1970; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable George Hansen was Mayor of Alameda, Idaho and supported its merger with Pocatello where he later served as City Commissioner; and
WHEREAS, Known for his colorful political style, the Honorable George Hansen represented Idaho's 2nd Congressional District for seven terms during the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s; and
WHEREAS, A staunch believer in personal liberty, the Honorable George Hansen earned the name "George the Dragon Slayer" for his high-profile attacks aimed at battling what he perceived as federal government overreach; and
WHEREAS, In 1979 the Honorable George Hansen traveled to Iran to attempt to negotiate a deal for the release of the hostages and was the only member of Congress to visit there during the 444-day crisis; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Honorable George Hansen serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared the Honorable George Hansen to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable George Hansen will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, the Honorable George Hansen imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this tenth day of September, 2014, do hereby commemorate the Honorable George Hansen for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of the Honorable George Hansen.
