MEMORIAL RESOLUTION

 

WHEREAS, It is with great sadness that members of this Chamber learned of the death of Archdiocesan Priest Reverend John Joseph Donohue on October 23, 2015 at the age of ninety-three; and

 

WHEREAS, The City Council has been informed of his passing by The Honorable Margaret Laurino, Alderman of the 39th Ward; and

 

WHEREAS, Born in Chicago on May 29, 1922, Father Donohue was the loving son of the late John M. and Margaret (Curran) Donohue and the beloved uncle of many nieces and nephews. He leaves a legacy of faith, dignity and love; and

 

WHEREAS, Father Donohue attended St. Mel School in Chicago, Quigley Preparatory Seminary, graduated from the University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary and was ordained into the priesthood on May 8, 1948 by Samuel Cardinal Stritch, Archbishop of Chicago; and

 

WHEREAS, Father Donohue was known as "Jason". He served as Assistant Pastor at numerous Chicago parishes including Our Lady of Help of Christians Parish (Closed 2005); Blessed Sacrament Parish (Closed 2005); St. Timothy Parish (on Washtenaw Avenue); and St. Jerome Parish. He was Assistant Pastor and Administrator of St. Edward Parish, from 1970 until he was made Pastor in 1981;and

 

WHEREAS, When he retired in 1992, Father Donohue was named Pastor Emeritus of St. Edward Parish. During his retirement, he served as Administrator of St. Maria Goretti Parish in Schiller Park. In addition, Father Donohue was a Judge for the Archdiocesan Metropolitan Tribunal and had been Chaplain for over eighteen years at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport; and

 

WHEREAS, Father Donohue, who will be remembered as a good man and a gentle, wise, inspiring, spiritual priest, touched the lives of all who knew him through his kindness, generosity and spirit. He will be deeply missed, but the memory of his character, intelligence and compassion will live on in those who knew and loved him, now, therefore,

 

Be It Resolved, That we, the Mayor and member of the City Council of the City of Chicago gathered here this eighteenth day of November, 2015, do hereby express our sorrow on the death of Archdiocesan Priest, Reverend John J. Donohue and express to his family and friends our deepest sympathy; and

 

Be It Further Resolved, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Archdiocesan Priest, Reverend John Joseph Donohue as a token of our honor, gratitude, and respect.
