RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Reverend Howard S. Nichols, Sr., has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 78; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, The Reverend Howard S. Nichols, Sr., was a widely admired member of the religious community and the longtime Pastor of Pleasant Gift Missionary Baptist Church on the South Side; and
WHEREAS, Raised in Canton, Mississippi, the Reverend Howard S. Nichols, Sr., was the son of a cotton gin machinist; and
WHEREAS, The Reverend Howard S. Nichols, Sr., moved to Chicago where he lived near 44th Street and Indiana Avenue and worked for a magazine printing company before running his own contracting business and investing in commercial real estate; and
WHEREAS, The Reverend Howard S. Nichols, Sr., earned a degree in sociology from Roosevelt University and attended the Chicago Baptist Institute International; and
WHEREAS, The Reverend Howard S. Nichols, Sr., continued religious studies at Harvard University and the University of Chicago; and
WHEREAS, The Reverend Howard S. Nichols, Sr., preached his first sermon at Pleasant Gift Missionary Baptist Church in 1968 and was named head pastor in 1989; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Reverend Howard S. Nichols, Sr., serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, The Reverend Howard S. Nichols, Sr., was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To his loving wife, Ruth, his children, Debra, Shari, Krista, Marva and Howard, Jr., his twelve grandchildren and his three great-grandchildren, the Reverend Howard S. Nichols, Sr., imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this fifteenth day of April, 2015, do hereby commemorate the Reverend Howard S. Nichols, Sr., for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of the Reverend Howard S. Nichols, Sr.
