RESOLUTION

 

 

WHEREAS, Roscoe C. Brown, Jr., has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 94; and

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

 

WHEREAS, Roscoe C. Brown, Jr., was a decorated member of the famed Tuskegee Airmen who served his country in Europe during World War II; and

 

WHEREAS, Roscoe C. Brown, Jr., rose to the rank of Captain and commanded the 100th Fighter Squadron of the 332nd Fighter Group of the United States Army Air Forces; and

 

WHEREAS, A recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross, Roscoe C. Brown, Jr., was credited with shooting down an advanced German Me-262 fighter jet and an FW-190 fighter; and

 

WHEREAS, The son of a dentist and a teacher, Roscoe C. Brown, Jr., was born in Washington, D.C.; and

 

WHEREAS, Prior to joining the military, Roscoe C. Brown, Jr., graduated from Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts where he was the valedictorian of the Class of 1943; and

 

WHEREAS, Following the war, Roscoe C. Brown, Jr., was a professor at New York University where he directed the Institute of Afro-American Affairs; and

 

WHEREAS, Roscoe C. Brown, Jr., served as President of Bronx Community College from 1977 to 1993; and

 

WHEREAS, Roscoe C. Brown, Jr., was also Director for the Center for Education Policy at the City University of New York where he was a professor of Urban Education at its Graduate Center; and

 

WHEREAS, Roscoe C. Brown, Jr., joined fellow Tuskegee airmen at a 2007 ceremony at the U.S. Capitol Rotunda where they were collectively awarded a Congressional Gold Medal; and

 

 

WHEREAS, Roscoe C. Brown, Jr., was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and

 

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Roscoe C. Brown, Jr., imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twentieth day of July, 2016, do hereby commemorate Roscoe C. Brown, Jr., for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVEDyfThat a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Rosrcpe C. Brown, Jr.
