RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, John Flynn Rooney has gone to his eternal reward at the age of 56; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, A resident of the Beverly community, John Flynn Rooney was a widely admired member of Chicago's journalism community and the loving husband for 27 years of Margaret, nee Clarke; and
WHEREAS, John Flynn Rooney was the much-adored father of Edmund, Jack and Daniel to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, John Flynn Rooney was the dear brother of Edmund III, Molly, Ellen, Peter and Timothy; and
WHEREAS, Raised in St. John Fisher Parish, John Flynn Rooney graduated from Marist High School and studied communications at Loyola University of Chicago; and
WHEREAS, John Flynn Rooney earned a master's degree in public affairs reporting from the University of Illinois at Springfield; and
WHEREAS, The son of a Chicago Daily News reporter, John Flynn Rooney began his journalism career at the City News Bureau of Chicago where he carved out a reputation for tenacity and accuracy; and
WHEREAS, During his tenure at the legendary wire service, John Flynn Rooney was the first reporter to break the news of the 1982 cyanide-laced Tylenol capsule killings which claimed the lives of seven people; and
WHEREAS, In recognition of his reporting on the Tylenol tampering story, John Flynn Rooney was presented with both a Peter Lisagor Award and a Herman Kogan Award; and
WHEREAS, After working for the Tampa Tribune, John Flynn Rooney returned to Chicago to win accolades for his coverage of legal affairs at the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin; and
WHEREAS, John Flynn Rooney leaves behind a host of family members, friends and colleagues who will always remember his optimism and wisdom; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of John Flynn Rooney serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, John Flynn Rooney was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, John Flynn Rooney imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twentieth day of July, 2016, do hereby commemorate John Flynn Rooney for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED/jThat a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Johoy Flynn Rooney.
