RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Louis Francis Materre has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 91; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Louis Francis Materre was a widely admired Chicago business leader and the loving husband of Vera Jeanne, nee Bradley; and
WHEREAS, Louis Francis Materre's family operated The Materre Bros. Paint & Wallpaper Co. for nearly three decades in the Park Manor neighborhood on the South Side; and
WHEREAS, Among its celebrity clients were boxing legend Mohammad Ali, jazz singer Dinah Washington and Baseball Hall of Famer Ernie Banks; and
WHEREAS, The Materre Bros. Paint & Wallpaper Co. was operated by Louis Francis Materre's father and eventually passed on to him and his two brothers; and
WHEREAS, Louis Francis Materre joined the family-run business after serving on the Korean War during which he received two Bronze Stars and the Korean Service Medal; and
WHEREAS, The company operated from 1954 to 1983 and Louis Francis Materre eventually launched the Materre Insurance Agency which he ran for more than twenty years; and
WHEREAS, During his retirement, Louis Francis Materre pursued his love of traveling, golf and jazz; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Louis Francis Materre to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, Louis Francis Materre was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To his loving wife, Vera, his children, Micah, Gloria, Louis Jr. and Daryl, his six grandchildren, his one great-grandchild, and his brother, Oscar, Louis Francis Materre imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-third day of May, 2018, do hereby commemorate Louis Francis Materre for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Lojtfis Francis Materre.
