RESOLUTION
 
 
WHEREAS, Ruth Rothstein has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 90; and
 
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Aldermen Edward M. Burke and Roberto Maldonado; and
 
WHEREAS, Ruth Rothstein was a widely admired public servant and the devoted wife of the late David; and
 
WHEREAS, Ruth Rothstein was the beloved mother of Jonathan and Martha and grandmother of Max to whom she imparted many of the Fine and noble qualities that she possessed in abundance; and
 
WHEREAS, A native of Brooklyn, New York, Ruth Rothstein became involved in pro-union activities at an early age; and
 
WHEREAS, Ruth Rothstein began her career in the healthcare industry as a lab technician and parlayed her union experience and exceptional people skills into a position as personnel director at a Chicago hospital; and
WHEREAS, Having earned an outstanding reputation for visionary leadership, Ruth Rothstein took the reins of Mount Sinai Hospital during a time of transition and oversaw a restructuring that preserved the Jewish identity of the institution while building bridges to the Latino and African-American communities; and
WHEREAS, After her retirement from Mount Sinai, Ruth Rothstein continued her commitment to accessible, quality healthcare as the first head of the Cook County Bureau of Health Services; and
 
WHEREAS, Under her direction, Cook County revitalized its hospital system and established thirty neighborhood outpatient clinics; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Ruth Rothstein serve as an example to all; and
 
 
WHEREAS, Her love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Ruth Rothstein to her family members, friends and all who knew her, and enabled her to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
 
WHEREAS, To her beloved family, Ruth Rothstein imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
 
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this eleventh day of September, 2013, do hereby commemorate Rtith Rothstein for her grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to her family; and
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Rtith Rothstein.
