RESOLUTION

 

 

 

WHEREAS, Richard L. "Dick" Duchossois, a decorated veteran of World War II, led the Chicago City Council in the Pledge of Allegiance on January 13,2016; and

WHEREAS, Richard L. "Dick" Duchossois graduated from Morgan Park Military Academy and was enrolled at Washington and Lee University when Pearl Harbor was attacked in December of 1941; and

WHEREAS, A 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Reserves, Richard L. "Dick" Duchossois was called up two months later and put in command of part of a new division of tank destroyers whose motto was "strike and destroy"; and

WHEREAS, Richard L. "Dick" Duchossois arrived on Utah Beach a month, after the Normandy Invasion and commanded a tank battalion through five major European campaigns; and

WHEREAS, When General George Patton took command of the 3rd Army after the invasion, Richard L. "Dick" Duchossois served under his command as he raced across France; and

WHEREAS, On September 15, 1944, Richard L. "Dick" Duchossois was shot in the side while crossing the Moselle River and the bullet damaged nerves in his back that left him temporarily paralyzed; and

WHEREAS, Remarkably, Richard L. "Dick" Duchossois returned to combat under General Patton by Thanksgiving and participated in the Battle of the Bulge which began in mid-December; and

WHEREAS, A member of our "Greatest Generation," Richard L. "Dick" Duchossois is a recipient of a Purple Heart, the Bronze Star and the Legion of Honor Award bestowed by the French government and left the Army as a Major in 1946; and

WHEREAS, Following the war, Richard L. "Dick" Duchossois became a highly successful businessman and the founder and chairman of the Duchossois Group, Inc.; and

WHEREAS, In 2014 Richard L. "Dick" Duchossois returned to France to participate in ceremonies marking the 70th Anniversary of D-Day; now, therefore

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this tiiirteenth day of January, 2016, do hereby express our sincere gratitude to Richard L. "Dick" Duchossois for his service to our country and do hereby declare that Jan. 23, 2016 shall be officially recognized as Richard L. "Dick" Duchossois Day throughout the City of Chicago; and

 

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Richard L. "Dick" Duchossois.
