RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Honorable Bernard Carey has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 83; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Bernard Carey was a former Cook County State's Attorney and the loving husband for nearly 60 years of Mary Rita; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Bernard Carey was the much-adored father of Brian, Scott, Danny, Laura and Linda, the grandfather of ten and the great-grandfather of three to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, The son of a school principal, the Honorable Bernard Carey attended De LaSalle High School, St. Mary's University of Minnesota and DePaul University College of Law; and
WHEREAS, A former special agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Honorable Bernard Carey was elected to the office in 1972 as a Republican and served for two terms; and
WHEREAS, As Cook County's top prosecutor, the Honorable Bernard Carey helped launch Operation Greylord, the wide-ranging federal corruption probe during the 1980s that ensnared more than 100 defendants, including 15 judges; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Bernard Carey prosecuted numerous high-profile cases including that of serial killer John Wayne Gacy; and
WHEREAS, During his esteemed tenure, the Honorable Bernard Carey greatly reformed the office, doubled its ranks of attorneys to 500, and quadrupled the prosecution of its felony cases; and
WHEREAS, After serving as State's Attorney, the Honorable Bernard Carey became a member of the Cook County Board of Commissioners and was appointed a Circuit Court Judge; and
WHEREAS, A longtime resident of South Holland, the Honorable Bernard Carey moved to Florida in retirement; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Honorable Bernard Carey serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared the Honorable Bernard Carey to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Bernard Carey was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, the Honorable Bernard Carey imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-seventh day of June, 2018, do hereby commemorate the Honorable Bernard Carey for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of the Honorable Bernard Carey.
