RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Albert Vazquez has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 82; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, A longtime resident of the Little Village community, Albert Vazquez was a Latino activist and pioneering mental health professional; and
WHEREAS, The son of Mexican immigrant parents, Albert Vazquez was born in Chicago and grew up in the South Chicago neighborhood; and
WHEREAS, Albert Vazquez worked early in his career as a community organizer, as a pressman for Popular Science Magazine in Chicago and for the Hull House settlement on the Near West Side; and
WHEREAS, In the late 1960s, Albert Vazquez co-founded Pilsen Mental Health Center, now known as the Pilsen Wellness Center, where he was Executive Director for more than 30 years; and
WHEREAS, Albert Vazquez served on the boards of organizations that included Casa Aztlan and the Illinois Arts Council, and throughout his professional life urged local employers to hire more Latinos; and
WHEREAS, Albert Vazquez was also an architecture enthusiast who lived for several decades in a brick American Four-square style home in Little Village once owned by Chicago Mayor Anton Cermak; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Albert Vazquez serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Albert Vazquez to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, Albert Vazquez was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To his wife, Martha "Nora" Miranda, and his beloved family, Albert Vazquez imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-ninth day of July, 2015, do hereby commemorate Albert Vazquez for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
