RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Athanasios "Tom" Chiampas has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 90; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, A native of Greece, Athanasios "Tom" Chiampas was a widely admired civic leader and the loving husband of Katina, nee Stratigou; and
WHEREAS, Athanasios "Tom" Chiampas was the much-adored father of the Honorable Peggy, Ourania and Dr. George and the grandfather of five to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, Athanasios "Tom" Chiampas and his wife raised their children in the Albany Park and Jefferson Park communities; and
WHEREAS, An active and highly respected member of the Greek-American community, Athanasios "Tom" Chiampas served as a Cantor at many Greek churches in the Chicago area; and
WHEREAS, Athanasios "Tom" Chiampas taught Greek to generations of students and encouraged them to take great pride in their ethnic heritage; and
WHEREAS, Athanasios "Tom" Chiampas was a recipient of the St. Andrew's Service Cross for his dedication to the Greek Orthodox Church; and
WHEREAS, Along with his wife, Athanasios "Tom" Chiampas hosted the Hellenic American Radio Hour on WSBC-AM; and
WHEREAS, Athanasios "Tom" Chiampas enjoyed a long and rewarding career in public service with the Chicago Department of Human Services and the Chicago Transit Authority; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Athanasios "Tom" Chiampas serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Athanasios "Tom" Chiampas to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, Athanasios "Tom" Chiampas was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Athanasios "Tom" Chiampas imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this ninth day of November, 2016, do hereby commemorate Athanasios "Tom" Chiampas for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Athafiasios "Tom" Chiampas.
