RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Sanders "Sam" Hicks has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 90; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Sanders "Sam" Hicks was the loving husband of Karen; and
WHEREAS, Sanders "Sam" Hicks was the much-adored father of Stanley and Michael and the grandfather of two to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, Sanders "Sam" Hicks joined the Evanston Fire Department in 1950, becoming its first African-American member; and
WHEREAS, Sanders "Sam" Hicks was promoted to Captain in 1963, Assistant Chief of Training in 1973 and Chief in 1980; and
WHEREAS, Sanders "Sam" Hicks was credited with launching the department's paramedic program in 1976; and
WHEREAS, In recognition of his many contributions, a Fire Department training room was named in honor of Sanders "Sam" Hicks in 2015; and
WHEREAS, Sanders "Sam" Hicks was a founding member and coach of the Evanston Speed Skating Club; and
WHEREAS, Sanders "Sam" Hicks trained speed skater Shani Davis who was the first African-American to ever win Olympic gold; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Sanders "Sam" Hicks serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Sanders "Sam" Hicks to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Sanders "Sam" Hicks imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-eighth day of June, 2017, do hereby commemorate Sanders "Sam" Hicks for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Sandof s "Sam" Hicks. /
