RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Raquel Luna has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of eighty; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, A woman of dignity, grace and charm, Raquel Luna was the loving and devoted wife of the late Jose De La Torre; and
WHEREAS, Raquel Luna was the much-adored mother of eight children, the grandmother of forty-five and the great-grandmother of thirty-three to whom she imparted many of the fine and caring qualities which she possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, Raquel Luna was the much-adored matriarch of one of the largest and most deep-rooted Mexican-American families in Chicago's Little Village neighborhood; and
WHEREAS, Raquel Luna's family arrived in Chicago in 1927, when fewer than twenty-thousand Mexican immigrants resided in the city; and
WHEREAS, Born to migrant beet farm workers, Raquel Luna spent much of her childhood moving back and forth between Chicago and Mexico as her father struggled to find work during the Great Depression; and
WHEREAS, Even as a child, Raquel Luna was devoted to caring for others, and took great pride in bringing food to the sailors and pilots stationed at Navy Pier during World War II; and
WHEREAS, Raquel Luna eventually settled in Chicago for good, first on the Near West Side and later in the Little Village community; and
WHEREAS, Raquel Luna devoted much of her life caring for the day-today needs of her thriving family; and
WHEREAS, Raquel Luna inspired the lives of countless people through her great personal goodness, charity and concern; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Raquel Luna serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, Her love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Raquel Luna to her family members, friends and all who knew her, and enabled her to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, Raquel Luna will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her many relatives and friends; and
WHEREAS, To her beloved family, Raquel Luna imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this thirteenth day of April, 2011, do hereby commemorate Raquel Luna for her grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to her family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
