RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Philip D. Block, III has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 79; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Philip D. Block, III was a widely admired business and civic leader and the loving husband for 48 years of Judith; and
WHEREAS, Philip D. Block, III was the much-adored father of Philip D. IV and Margaret and the grandfather of five to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, Philip D. Block, III graduated from Yale University and joined Inland Steel Company which was founded by his great-grandfather in 1893; and
WHEREAS, Philip D. Block, III served the company for 27 years before retiring as Vice President of Purchasing; and
WHEREAS, In 1985 Philip D. Block, III began a new career when he opened the Chicago office of the Capital Guardian Trust Company, a Los Angeles-based investment firm; and
WHEREAS, A true gentleman who was thoughtful and kind, Philip D. Block, III passionately believed in civic responsibility and volunteerism; and
WHEREAS, Philip D. Block, III was Chairman of the Board of the Shedd Aquarium and the Chicago History Museum and was actively involved in a number of organizations; and
WHEREAS, In his leisure time, Philip D. Block, III enjoyed traveling and fishing in northern Wisconsin; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Philip D. Block, III serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Philip D. Block, III to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, Philip D. Block, III was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Philip D. Block, III imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twentieth day of July, 2016, do hereby commemorate Philip D. Block, III for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
