RESOLUTION

 

 

WHEREAS, Sheldon Roodman has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 74; and

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

 

WHEREAS, A resident of High wood, Sheldon Roodman was the loving husband of Diane; and

 

WHEREAS, Sheldon Roodman was a widely respected champion of the poor who ably led the Legal Assistance Foundation in Chicago for 30 years; and

 

WHEREAS, Raised in St. Louis, Sheldon Roodman graduated from the University of Michigan and Washington University Law School; and

 

WHEREAS, Sheldon Roodman came to Chicago where he practiced law and in 1969 joined a predecessor organization that became the Legal Aid Foundation in 1972; and

 

WHEREAS, Sheldon Roodman was named Executive Director of the Legal Aid Foundation in 1977 and ably led the organization until his retirement in 2007; and

 

WHEREAS, During his tenure, Sheldon Roodman guided the organization, now called LAF Chicago, through financial challenges and became a widely admired mentor to many young lawyers; and

 

WHEREAS, A champion for the rights of the poor, Sheldon Roodman argued two cases before the United States Supreme Court and his legal work won him awards; and

 

WHEREAS, The sacrifice and dedication of Sheldon Roodman serve as an example to all; and

 

WHEREAS, Sheldon Roodman was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and

 

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Sheldon Roodman imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

 

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this sixteenth day of March, 2016, do hereby commemorate Sheldon Roodman for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Sheldon Roodman.
