RESOLUTION
 
 
WHEREAS, Robert Fogel, the University of Chicago Nobel Laureate, has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 86; and
 
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
 
WHEREAS, Robert Fogel was the loving and devoted husband for fifty-nine years of the late Enid; and
 
WHEREAS, Robert Fogel was the much-adored father of Michael and Steven, the cherished grandfather of five and the doting great-grandfather of two to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
 
WHEREAS, A native of New York City, Robert Fogel earned his undergraduate degree from Cornell University, his master's degree from Columbia University and his doctorate from Johns Hopkins University; and
 
WHEREAS, Robert Fogel was recognized for his research on slavery and his studies of the impact of 19th century railroads on American economic growth; and
 
WHEREAS, In addition to teaching at the University of Chicago, Robert Fogel held positions at Harvard Univeristy and the University of Rochester; and
 
WHEREAS, In 1993, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded Robert Fogel a Nobel Prize in Economics "for having renewed research in economic history by applying economic theory and quantitative methods in order to explain economic and institutional change"; and
 
WHEREAS, The founding director of the University of Chicago's Center for Population Economics, Robert Fogel oversaw the compilation of databanks to aid researchers in predicting fundamental economic trends such as health-care costs, the size of the labor force and demands on pension programs; and
 
 
WHEREAS, Robert Fogel shared his passion for history, unique insight and deep wisdom with many in Chicago and beyond; and
 
WHEREAS, The hard work and dedication of Robert Fogel serve as an example to us all; and
 
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Robert Fogel to his family members, friends, students and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
 
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Robert Fogel imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
 
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-sixth day of June, 2013, do hereby commemorate Robert Fogel for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Robert Fogel.
