RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, James Alter has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 92; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, James Alter was a prominent Chicago civic leader and the loving husband of the late Honorable Joanne; and
WHEREAS, James Alter was the much-adored father of Jennifer, Jonathan, Jamie and Harrison, the dear brother of Mitzy, and the grandfather of eleven; and
WHEREAS, The son of a pioneer in radio and television distribution, James Alter served in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II and flew 31 combat missions over Europe; and
WHEREAS, Following the war, James Alter graduated from Lake Forest College and earned a master's in business administration degree from the University of Chicago School of Business; and
WHEREAS, James Alter joined the family business and went on to lead the Harry Alter Company, the refrigeration and air conditioning wholesale business founded by his father; and
WHEREAS, James Alter and his-wife served as aides to Governor Adlai Stevenson II in his 1952 and 1956 presidential campaigns; and
WHEREAS, Widely admired for his civic contributions, James Alter was a Founder of Friends of the Parks and served on the boards of People for the Public Interest and the Chicago Academy of Sciences; and
WHEREAS, James Alter also supported his wife's successful election campaign to become a Commissioner of the Metropolitan Sanitary District; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of James Alter serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared James Alter to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, James Alter will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, James Alter imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this tenth day of September, 2014, do hereby commemorate James Alter for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to/the family of James Alter.
