RESOLUTION
 
 
WHEREAS, After serving a successful seven year term, the Honorable James F. Holderman has stepped down as Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois; and
 
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this event by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
 
WHEREAS, A Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois since 1985, the Honorable James F. Holderman was named Chief Judge in July 2006; and
 
WHEREAS, The Honorable James F. Holderman earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois in 1968, and a law degree from the University of Illinois College of Law in 1971; and
 
WHEREAS, From 1971 to 1972, the Honorable James F. Holderman served as a clerk for federal court Judge Edward J. McManus in Iowa and then worked from 1972 to 1978 as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Chicago; and
 
WHEREAS, The Honorable James F. Holderman was a partner in the law firm of Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal from 1978 to 1985; and
 
WHEREAS, Appointed Judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois by President Ronald Reagan in 1985, the Honorable James F. Holderman has presided over cases in all areas of federal jurisdiction; and
 
WHEREAS, A talented instructor who draws on a decades of practical experience, the Honorable James F. Holderman has taught courses at Chicago-Kent College of Law, Northwestern University School of Law, the University of Chicago Law School, the John Marshall Law School and the University of Illinois College of Law; and
 
 
WHEREAS, As Chief Judge, the Honorable James F. Holderman managed a budget of $27 million and oversaw a 450 member staff in addition to many other important judicial duties; and
 
WHEREAS, Widely respected for his legal expertise, especially in regard to intellectual property cases and trial advocacy, the Honorable James F. Holderman has been recognized by the American Bar Association, the Chicago Bar Association, the Chicago Inn of Court, the Illinois Bar Foundation, the Women's Bar Association of Illinois, and other prestigious organizations; and
 
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-fourth day of July, 2013, do hereby commend the Honorable James F. Holderman for his years of faithful service and wish him all the best in his future endeavors; and
