RESOLUTION

 

 

WHEREAS, James R. Masek has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the.age of 71; and

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

 

WHEREAS, A resident of the Uptown neighborhood, James R. Masek was a widely admired Chicago journalist and the loving husband of Mary Peele-Masek; and

 

WHEREAS, James R. Masek was the much-adored son of John F. and the late Betty and the dear brother of Joanne and Mary Kathryn; and

 

WHEREAS, A native of Joliet, James R. Masek graduated from Loyola University where he was editor of the Loyola News, and went on to work at a number of suburban newspapers; and

 

WHEREAS, James R. Masek later joined the Chicago Tribune-owned Chicago Today where he was a copy editor and rose to become makeup editor responsible for crafting the newspaper's design; and

 

WHEREAS, When Chicago Today closed its doors in 1974, James R. Masek was hired by the Chicago Tribune where he worked for twenty years; and

 

WHEREAS, Known for his coolness under pressure, James R. Masek was a popular member of the newspaper's staff; and

 

WHEREAS, One of the high-points of James R. Masek's career was his role overseeing the coverage of the 1994 Winter Olympic Games in Lillehammer, Norway; and '

 

WHEREAS, James R. Masek lived for two decades in Wilmette before moving to Chicago where he was a faithful member of St. Ita Catholic Church; and

 

WHEREAS, Following his retirement, James R. Masek pursued his interests in the arts and wrote the occasional travel piece for the Chicago Tribune; and

 

 

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of James R. Masek serve as an example to all; and

 

WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared James R. Masek to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and

 

WHEREAS, James R. Masek will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and

 

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, James R. Masek imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this eighteenth day of March, 2015, do hereby commemorate James R. Masek for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
