RESOLUTION

 

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Robert Gilliam has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 69; and

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Robert Gilliam was; the longest-serving member of the Elgin .City Council and the loving husband of Marianne; and

 

WHEREAS, A wise counselor, friend and mentor to many, the Honorable Robert Gilliam cared deeply about his community; and

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Robert Gilliam enjoyed a long and highly successful career as an educator and administrator for District U-46 from which he retired in 2002 as an Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources; and

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Robert Gilliam was credited during his tenure with recruiting bilingual educators and creating more diversity in the district's teaching staff; and

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Robert Gilliam ran for election to the Elgin City Council in 1973 and was elected as its first African-American member; and

 

WHEREAS, During a remarkable career of public service which^spanned forty years, the Honorable Robert Gilliam became a legendary trailblazer renowned for his vision and commitment to public service; and

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Robert Gilliam was a-peacemaker who never missed an opportunity to turn a potential adversary into an ally; and

 

WHEREAS, In recognition of his .\yidely regarded integrity and many achievements in office, the'City of Elgin renamed its municipal complex in honor of the Honorable Robert Gilliam on September 11, 2014; and

 

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Honorable Robert Gilliam serve, as an example to all; and

 

WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to;,the fullest endeared the Honorable Robert Gilliam to his family members, friends and-all who

 

 

knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives ih ways they will never forget; and

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Robertv Gilliam will^_pe dearly missed arid fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and

 

WHEREAS, To his beloved family; the Honorable^Robert Gilliam imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the-members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-first day-of January, 2015, do hereby commemorate the Honorable Robert Gilliam for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his^family; and
