RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Houston McCoy has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 72; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, A proud veteran of the United Stales Army, Houston McCoy was a dedicated and widely respected member ofthe law enforcement community; and
WHEREAS, Houston McCoy was the much-adored father of Monika, Kristofer, Stefan and Philip to whom he imparted many ofthe tine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, Just before noon on August 1, 1966, on the University of Texas at Austin campus, a sniper began to shoot people from the 28-story clock tower; and
WHEREAS, With terrifying accuracy and range, the sniper managed to kill fourteen people and wound thirty-two others over the course of his rampage; and
WHEREAS, Houston McCoy, then an Austin Police Officer, along with Officer Ramiro Martinez and two others, bravely made his way through a barricaded door to the twenty-eighth floor observation deck; and
WHEREAS, Placing themselves in extreme danger for the greater good. Officers McCoy and Martinez worked together to fatally shoot the sniper and put and end to the carnage; and
WHEREAS, For his courageous role in stopping the University of Texas sniper, Houston McCoy was awarded the Austin Police Medal of Valor in 1967; and
WHEREAS, After leaving the Austin Police Force, Houston McCoy spent several years as a civilian flight instructor for the United States Air Force; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Houston McCoy serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Houston McCoy to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Houston McCoy imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now. therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members ofthe Chicago City Council, assembled this seventeenth day of January, 2013, do hereby commemorate Houston McCoy for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy ofthis resolution be presented to the family of Houston McCoy.
