RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Richard C. Hottelet has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 97; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Richard C. Hottelet was a widely admired member of the journalism community and the loving husband of the late Ann; and
WHEREAS, Richard C. Hottelet was the much-adored father of the late Richard and Antonia, the grandfather of four and the great-grandfather of two to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, Richard C. Hottelet was the last surviving member of "Murrow's Boys," a pioneering group of World War II era journalists hired by the legendary newsman Edward R. Murrow; and
WHEREAS, Richard C. Hottelet began serving as a foreign correspondent for United Press in Berlin, Germany before the start of World War II; and
WHEREAS, Richard C. Hottelet spent time in a German prison on espionage charges before being freed and joining Murrow at CBS; and
WHEREAS, Richard C. Hottelet covered major campaigns of the war, including the D-Day invasion of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge; and
WHEREAS, Richard C. Hottelet bailed out of a B-17 bomber while covering Operation Varsity in March of 1945 and landed in France after his aircraft was hit by German anti-aircraft fire over the Rhine River; and
WHEREAS, During the Cold War era, Richard C. Hottelet reported from Moscow, West Germany and the United Nations; and
WHEREAS, For decades, Richard C. Hottelet appeared on the CBS Evening News and Face the Nation; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Richard C. Hottelet serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Richard C. Hottelet to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, Richard C. Hottelet will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Richard C. Hottelet imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-first day of January, 2015, do hereby commemorate Richard C. Hottelet for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy^of this resolution be presented to the family of Richard C. Hottelet. /
