MEMORIAL RESOLUTION FOR DR. HYO HYUN BYUN ii? T „Jc;

WHEREAS, Dr. Hyo Hyun Byun (Sal), passed away on January 23, 2016; and rn""' 3
WHEREAS, This august body has been informed of his death by the Honorable Margaret Laurin^ Alderman of the 39th Ward; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Byun was born on February 28, 1929 in Seoul, Korea; and received his Doctor of Medicine from one of Korea's oldest and most prestigious university, Yonsei University, in 1950, and;
WHEREAS, After graduation, Dr. Byun served in the ROK Army Medical Corps during the Korean War, receiving the Hwa-Rang Medal of Distinguished Military Services from Republic of Korea Military. He moved to Chicago in 1956 to complete his residency in Radiology and fellowship in Radiation Therapy and Nuclear Medicine at Cook County Hospital; and
WHEREAS, Since beginning his medical career in 1960, Dr. Byun held a variety of distinguished positions, including as Director of Nuclear Medicine at Cook County Hospital, Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine, and Illinois Masonic Medical Center; Attending Physician at Edward Vines Jr. VA Hospital; Chairman ofthe Department of Radiology at Edgewater Hospital; and Vice Chairman ofthe University of Chicago Department of Radiology. Upon retirement, Dr. Byun was Manager of Lake Bluff Health Care Centre skilled-care nursing facility; and
WHEREAS, Despite his numerous professional commitments, Dr. Byun made it a priority to serve the Korean-American community in Chicago. Dr. Byun served as President of the Korean-American Association of Chicago, President ofthe Advisory Council on Peaceful Unification of Korea Midwest Chapter in the United State, as a member of the Board of Directors of the Midwest Chapter of Korean Veterans Association in United States, and President of Korean Radiologists in the United States; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Byun was a fierce advocate for the people of Chicago, Illinois, and Korea, serving on the Asian American Advisory Committee to the Illinois Attorney General, Asian American Advisory Committee to the Illinois Governor, City of Chicago Board of Commissioners on Human Relations, and Chairman ofthe Advisory Council on Asian Affairs for former Mayor Richard M. Daley. He also received the Mok-Ryun Medal of Distinguished Civic Services from the president of the Republic of Korea for his achievement and contributions; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Byun was inducted to the Chicago Senior Citizen Hall of Fame and received a Luminary Senior Award from the City of Chicago in 2003 for his working helping 586 Korean seniors gain U.S. Citizenship. Dr. Byun worked closely with the U.S. immigration office and came up with an easier way for seniors to obtain citizenship, such as reducing language barriers and improving transparency ofthe citizenship process; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Byun leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Chung Sook Kim, M.D., his daughters, Susanne and Margaret Byun, his sons, Richard, Peter (Sara), and Michael (Julie) Byun, and his stepchildren, Janice and John (Sophia) Roe, as well as eight grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, A cherished friend and supportive family member to all, Dr. Byun will be deeply missed but the remembrance of his dedication to the medical profession and his community will live on in those who knew and loved him; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved, That we, the Mayor and members ofthe City Council ofthe City of Chicago, gathered this thirteenth day of April, 2016 A.D., do hereby commemorate Dr. Hyo Hyun Byun for his many lifetime contributions and do hereby extend to his family and many friends our sincere condolences.
