RESOLUTION

 

 

WHEREAS, Meadowlark Lemon has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 83; and

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

 

WHEREAS, Meadowlark Lemon was a legendary member of the Harlem Globetrotters whose skill as a basketball player and entertainer brought joy to millions of fans over the course of his career; and

 

WHEREAS, Called the "Clown Prince" of basketball, Meadowlark Lemon was known as much for his pranks as for his amazing half-court hook-shots and no-look, behind-the-back passes; and

 

WHEREAS, A native of Wilmington, North Carolina, Meadowlark Lemon was born Meadow George Lemon II in 1932; and

 

WHEREAS, Meadowlark Lemon joined the Harlem Globetrotters in 1955 and earned a reputation as the team's most popular showman; and

 

WHEREAS, Meadowlark Lemon was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and the International Clown Hall of Fame; and

 

WHEREAS, The athlete's skills were also showcased as part of the Meadowlark Lemon Harlem All-Stars team; and

 

WHEREAS, Meadowlark Lemon later became a motivational speaker and ordained minister who led the Scottsdale, Arizona-based Meadowlark Lemon Ministries; and

 

WHEREAS, Meadowlark Lemon crisscrossed the country to spread the gospel at many churches and youth camps; and

 

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Meadowlark Lemon serve as an example to all; and

 

WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Meadowlark Lemon to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and

 

 

WHEREAS, Meadowlark Lemon was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and

 

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Meadowlark Lemon imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this thirteenth day of January, 2016, do hereby commemorate Meadowlark Lemon for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
