RESOLUTION

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Lewis Landsberg has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 82; and

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Landsberg is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jill, his children Alison and Judd, his son in law Matt Karush, his daughter in law Sarita Ordonez, his sister Harriet August, and his beloved grandchildren Eli, Leah, Maya, Lucas and Jonah; and

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Landsberg was born November 23,1938; and

 

WHEREAS, In 1960, Dr. Landsberg graduated summa cum laude from Williams College with his Bachelor's degree; and

 

WHEREAS, In 1964, Dr. Landsberg graduated from Yale University School of Medicine with his medical degree and pursued residency training in internal medicine at Yale New Haven Hospital and eventually became chief resident; and

 

WHEREAS, In 1986, Dr. Landsberg was recruited to Harvard Medical School where he was eventually promoted to professor of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Endocrinology at Beth Israel Hospital; and

 

WHEREAS, In 1990, Dr. Landsberg joined the faculty of Northwestern University as the Irving S. Cutter Professor and Chairman ofthe Department of Medicine at the medical school and Physician-in-Chief at Northwestern Memorial Hospital; and

 

WHEREAS, In 1999, Dr. Landsberg was appointed Vice President for Medical Affairs at Northwestern University and Dean of Northwestern University Medical School; and

 

WHEREAS, During Dr. Landsberg's tenure, he appointed eight new center and institute directors along with seventeen new department chairs and increased research by more than 70 percent; and

 

WHEREAS, After his thirty year career, Dr. Landsberg officially retired on October 15, 2020 from his position as the Irving S. Cutter Professor of Medicine, Dean Emeritus. He continued his involvement with the medical school as an active member ofthe Landsberg Society; and

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Landsberg was an author of over 230 peer-reviewed publications and wrote two books, "1000 Internal Medicine Pearls" and "Catecholamines" which summarized his personal clinical experience in internal medicine, as well as his laboratory research; and

 

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Landsberg was a member of numerous distinguished professional societies and has received.many awards and honors, such as the Franz Volhard Award.from the international Society of Hypertension, election to Fellowship ofthe American Association for the Advancement of Science and appointment as Master of the American College of Physicians; and

 

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Dr. Lewis Landsberg imparts a legacy of generosity, compassion, devotion to family and medicine; and

 

WHEREAS, The Medical School of North Western University will host a Memorial Convocation on the campus ofthe University on November 8, 2021; now, therefore

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this Fourteenth day of October, 2021, do hereby commemorate Dr. Lewis Landsberg for his grace-filled life and declare that November 8,2021 be and the same is hereby designated to be Dr. Lewis Landsberg Day in the City of Chicago; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOL VED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to, the family of Dr. Lewis Landsberg.
