Memorial Resolution

 

WHEREAS, It is with great sadness that the members of this chamber learned of the departure of Mattie M. Levy Brown on December 1, 2017; and

 

WHEREAS, This esteemed body has been notified of her passing by the Honorable Emma Mitts, Alderman of the 37th Ward; and

 

WHEREAS, Mattie Levy Brown, born on May 29, 1928 in Alabama, Sumter County, was the beloved daughter of the late Joe and Genie Levy McDowell. She is proceeded in death by her dear husband, Frank Brown Sr.; son, Frank Brown, Jr.; brothers, Ellis Sr., Curtis, Fred and Edward Sr.; sisters, Gertrude, Louise and Mary lou; and

 

WHEREAS, Mattie confessed her love of Christ at an early age and became a member of Palestine Baptist Church in Coatopa, Alabama. She later joined Friendship Baptist Church (Damen and Washington) in Chicago under the leadership of Rev. Rufus J. Davis and remained a faithful member for well over 60 years. She was also a member of the Contemporary Sunday School and Missionary Society. Mattie loved God and her church family; and

 

WHEREAS, Mattie met the love of her life, Frank and were united in matrimony on August 5, 1950. They were blessed with six children; and

 

WHEREAS, Mattie was a devoted care giver and embraced giving back to her community. She was an active member in her Kirkland Avenue block club. She believed in the power of the vote and preached it to her children and grandchildren; and

 

WHEREAS, Mattie had a passion for reading and impressed upon her grandchildren the joy and importance of reading. Her favorite reading material were her Bible, Black History and Daily Bread; and

 

WHEREAS, Mattie leaves to cherish her memories, Carrie Brown Billups (John) (California), Maxine Brown-Lockhart (Missouri), Maretta Brown-Miller (Illinois), Cornelus O. Brown (US V.I.), Juanita Brown (California), Catherine Jones Brown (Illinois); grandchildren, Deidre', Burgundy, Cinnamon, Candice, Marnita, Gervaise, Richard II, Matthew II, Marissa, Justin, and Starry; great-grandchildren Shawn Jr., Nylah, Kaylah, Chloe', Alexander, Donovon, Isabelle, Nicholas, Terrane Jr., Cayden; Sister's-in-Laws, Leona Brown Jones (Alabama) Clara Jones (Georgia), Shirley Brown (Alabama) and Marie Brown (Michigan) and host of loving nieces, nephews and treasured friend to all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Matti leaves a legacy of faith, dignity and love; and

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, gathered here this thirteenth day of December, 2017, do hereby express our sorrow on the passing of Mattie M. Levy Brown and extend to their family our sincere condolences.

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be prepared and presented to the family of-Mattie M. Levy Brown as sign of our sympathy.
