RESOLUTION

 

 

WHEREAS, John McNicholas, the third highest ranking official in the Chicago Fire Department, has officially retired following a long and distinguished career in public service; and

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this event by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

 

WHEREAS, John McNicholas joined the Chicago Fire Department on February 18, 1980; and

 

WHEREAS, During his long and illustrious career, John McNicholas ably served at numerous assignments, including: Truck 50; Engine 116; District 4 Relief; District 1 Relief; Engine 74; Truck 4; Operations Headquarters Relief; Battalion 17; District 7; District 5 Relief; District 3; and Operations Headquarters; and

 

WHEREAS, Rising steadily through the ranks, John McNicholas was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in 1989 and promoted to Captain in 1995; and

 

WHEREAS, John McNicholas became a Battalion Chief in 2000 and a Deputy District Chief four years later; and

 

WHEREAS, John McNicholas was named a District Chief in 2007 and an Assistant Deputy Commissioner in 2010; and

 

WHEREAS, John McNicholas was appointed Deputy Fire Commissioner in 2012 and announced his retirement from that position in 2016; and

 

WHEREAS, Citizens throughout the City of Chicago are inspired by and indebted to our valiant firefighters who exhibit courage and bravery every day in the course of their duties; and

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago Fire Department exemplifies the power of human compassion and the strength of the American spirit through actions of the most heroic magnitude; and

 

WHEREAS, The sacrifices and the selfless dedication of our firefighters merit tribute and recognition by the people of the City of Chicago; and

 

WHEREAS, The leaders of this great City of Chicago are cognizant of the great debt owed to our public servants; now, therefore

 

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twentieth day of July, 2016, do hereby congratulate John McNicholas on the occasion of his retirement and do herby express our best wishes for his continued good health and success; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to John McNicholas.
