RESOLUTION

 

 

WHEREAS, Samuel Tom Holiday has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 94; and

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

 

WHEREAS, Samuel Tom Holiday was the loving husband of the late Lupita; and

 

WHEREAS, Samuel Tom Holiday was the much-adored father of eight, the grandfather of thirty-five, the great-grandfather of thirty and the great-great-grandfather of two to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and

 

WHEREAS, Samuel Tom Holiday was one of the last surviving Navajo Code Talkers who served in World War II; and

 

WHEREAS, Samuel Tom Holiday joined the United States Marine Corps when he was 19 years old and was among hundreds of Navajos who used a code based on their native language to transmit messages during the war; and

 

WHEREAS, The code was never broken by the Japanese and Samuel Tom Holiday was awarded the Congressional Silver Medal and a Purple Heart; and

 

WHEREAS, After the war, Samuel Tom Holiday returned to the reservation where he worked as a police officer and ranger before starting his own equipment company; and

 

WHEREAS, In 2013 Samuel Tom Holiday co-authored a book about his experiences called "Under the Eagle"; and

 

WHEREAS, The courage, sacrifice and dedication of Samuel Tom Holiday serve as an example to all; and

 

WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Samuel Tom Holiday to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and

 

 

WHEREAS, Samuel Tom Holiday was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and

 

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Samuel Tom Holiday imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-seventh day of June, 2018, do hereby commemorate Samuel Tom Holiday for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVEDyf 'hat a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Sar/tiel Tom Holiday.
