RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Honorable Belisario Betancur has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Belisario Betancur was the 26th President of Columbia; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Belisario Betancur was President from 1982 to 1986 and during his tenure he attempted peace talks with several Columbian guerilla groups; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Belisario Betancur's reform-minded administration promoted low-cost housing and open universities as well as began a literacy campaign and endorsed a tax amnesty program; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Belisario Betancur previously served as Columbian Ambassador to Spain from 1975 to 1977 and as Minister of Labor in 1963; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Belisario Betancur was also one of his nation's few Presidents to abstain from politics after leaving office; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Honorable Belisario Betancur serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared The Honorable Belisario Betancur to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Belisario Betancur was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by liis many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To his wife, Dalia, and his three children, the Honorable Belisario Betancur imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-third day of January, 2019, do hereby commemorate the Honorable Belisario Betancur for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
presented to the family of the Honorable Belisario Betancur.
