RESOLUTION

 

 

WHEREAS, Thomas J. Ahern has announced his retirement as the Chief Spokesperson and Public Information Officer for Chicago Field Division of the U.S. Department of Justice Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; and

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council this event by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

 

WHEREAS, Thomas J. Ahern has ably served in the position since 1999; and

 

WHEREAS, Thomas J. Ahern joined the U.S. Department of Justice in 1987 and also served during his career as an instructor at the ATF National Academy in Glynco, Georgia; and

 

WHEREAS, As spokesperson, Thomas J. Ahern provided the public with concise and accurate information detailing a number of high-profile cases over the years, including the Lieutenant Joseph Gliniewicz death investigation, the Washington, D.C. Navy Yard massacre, the Boston Marathon bombings, the NATO Summit in Chicago and the Northern Illinois University massacre; and

 

WHEREAS, Thomas J. Ahern was a Special Agent for the Criminal Investigations Division of the State of Illinois Department of Revenue; and

 

WHEREAS, From 1980 to 1983 Thomas J. Ahern was an Investigator for the State of Illinois Legislative Investigating Commission; and

 

WHEREAS, Throughout his career in government, Thomas J. Ahern upheld the highest and most noble traditions of public service; and

 

WHEREAS, Thomas J. Ahern graduated from Marquette University and earned a master's degree in Public Administration from Roosevelt University; and

 

WHEREAS, Thomas J. Ahern is a recipient of the ATF Distinguished Service Medal in recognition of his work during crisis negotiations and the Cook County Crime Stoppers Award for his response to the Columbine High School massacre; and

 

 

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Thomas J. Ahern serve as an example to all; now, therefore

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-eighth day of June, 2017, do hereby congratulate Thomas J. Ahern on his exemplary career with the Bureau and do hereby extend our best wishes for his continued success in all his future endeavors; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Thomas J. Ahern.   M /
