RESOLUTION

 

 

WHEREAS, John Young has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 87; and

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

 

WHEREAS, John Young was a legendary NASA astronaut who was the ninth man to walk on the Moon and led the first Space Shuttle flight; and

 

WHEREAS, A native of Orlando, Florida, John Young earned an aeronautical engineering degree from Georgia Institute of Technology and was a Navy fighter pilot; and

 

WHEREAS, A true space-age pioneer, John Young became an astronaut in 1962 alongside Neil Armstrong, Pete Conrad and James Lovell; and

 

WHEREAS, John Young was the only astronaut to be part of NASA's Gemini, Apollo and shuttle programs; and

 

WHEREAS, Often referred to as the conscience of NASA, John Young spoke out on safety measures even before the Challenger disaster; and

 

WHEREAS, John Young called for NASA to expand space exploration three-fold and build a space station to deflect asteroids that could threaten earth; and

 

WHEREAS, John Young retired from NASA in 2004 following a record career that spanned 42 years, longer than any other astronaut; and

 

WHEREAS, The courage, sacrifice and dedication of John Young serve as an example to all; and

 

WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared John Young to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and

 

WHEREAS, John Young was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and

 

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, John Young imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

 

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this seventeenth day of January, 2018, do hereby commemorate John Young for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of John Young.
