MEMORIAL RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, It is with great sadness that members of this Chamber learned of the death of Margaret Mary McMullan ("Mickey") Quinlan, on July 19, 2016, at the age of ninety-five; and
WHEREAS, The City Council has been informed of her passing by the Honorable Margaret Laurino, Alderman of the 39th Ward; and
WHEREAS, born on December 23, 1920 in St. Louis, Missouri, Mickey, affectionately known as, was the beloved wife of the late Albert F. Quinlan; loving mother of Patricia Quinlan Mikkelsen, Margaret M. Quinlan, Albert Frank Quinlan, Jr., Michael J. (Kathy M. Marciniak) Quinlan, William J. (Jean Hadenfeldt) Quinlan, John J. (Molly McCord) Quinlan, Thomas J. (Suzanne McHale) Quinlan, Mary Grace (Kurt Wagner) Quinlan, Catherine M. Quinlan Siegel, Anna M. Quinlan, and Maria E. (Steve Farber) Quinlan; dearest grandmother of Kate (Paul Rossetto) Mikkelsen, Margaret (Ryan Faulkner) Mikkelsen, Thomas Mikkelsen (Linda Wolf) Wolf, David Siegel, Daniel Siegel, Patricia Quinlan Wagner, Alice Quinlan, Jack Quinlan, Joseph Quinlan, Olivia Quinlan, Gracianna Quinlan Allen, Andrew Quinlan, and Madeline Quinlan; beloved great-grandmother of Stella Mikkelsen Faulkner, Vivienne Mikkelsen Rossetto, and Charles Thomas Mikkelsen Rossetto; dearest sister of the late Grace McMullan Mertz, and the late Marie McMullan Neu Leindecker; fond aunt of many nieces and nephews; and treasured friend to all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Mickey leaves a legacy of faith, dignity and love; and
WHEREAS, In 1948, Mickey became interested in the concept of continuing education and joined the first great books program. Shortly thereafter, she organized and coordinated the Junior Great Books program. In 1966 she was appointed the Chairman of the St. Louis Committee on Great Books joined the first Great books program in 1948. She was an amazingly smart and successful businesswoman in the art world; and
WHEREAS, Family was the core of Mickey's life, they would gather together spending quality time in Door County, Wisconsin. The drive from St. Louis in a station wagon with no air conditioner made for a long and hot ride but the joy of arriving, hopping out of the car and all jumping into the lake was worth it, a tradition that continues today with her many grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, Later, Mickey and her husband built a house, "the cottage" as she called it, in Whitefish Bay. It was Mickey's happy place, where she enjoyed nature and all its beauty. The door was always opened and all were welcomed with a warm heart. The Cottage became a hub for discussion on politics, books and the art and culture scene. Her children and grandchildren now enjoy homes on Cave Point Drive and on "Mickey Way"; and
WHEREAS, Mickey was an active and vital member of her communities in both St. Louis and Door County. She touched the lives of all who knew her through her kindness, generosity and engaging conversation. She will be deeply missed, but the memory of her character, intelligence and compassion will live on in those who knew and loved her; now, therefore
Be It Resolved, That we, the Mayor and member of the City Council of the City of Chicago gathered here this fourteenth day of December, 2016, do hereby express our sorrow on the death of Margaret Mary McMullan ("Mickey") Quinlan and express to her family and friends our deepest sympathy; and
Be It Further Resolved, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Margaret Mary McMullan ("Mickey") Quinlan as a token of our honor, gratitude, and respect.
