RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Dr. Jesse L. Steinfeld has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 87; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Jesse L. Steinfeld served with honor and distinction as the 11th Surgeon General of the United States of America; and
WHEREAS, A former oncologist with the National Cancer Institute, Dr. Jesse L. Steinfeld was the nation's chief health advocate and medical educator from 1969 to 1973; and
WHEREAS, As Surgeon General, Dr. Jesse L. Steinfeld headed the United States Public Health Service and launched a national campaign warning of the dangers of smoking; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Jesse L. Steinfeld was in office when warning labels were posted on cigarette packaging that read "the surgeon general has determined that cigarette smoking is dangerous to your health"; and
WHEREAS, In 1971 Dr. Jesse L. Steinfeld released a report that smoking leads to heart disease and that smokers are more likely to die of cancers associated with the lungs and larynx; and
WHEREAS, Based on these findings, Dr. Jesse L. Steinfeld proposed that smoking be prohibited in public places, including trains, buses, airplanes, theaters and restaurants; and
WHEREAS, During his esteemed tenure, Dr. Jesse L. Steinfeld also addressed a range of health concerns, including carcinogens in foods and the use of pesticides; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Dr. Jesse L. Steinfeld serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Dr. Jesse L. Steinfeld to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Jesse L. Steinfeld was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To his loving wife, Gen, and his three daughters, Dr. Mary Beth, Jody and Susan, Dr. Jesse L. Steinfeld imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this tenth day of September, 2014, do hereby commemorate Dr. Jesse L: Steinfeld for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Dr. Jesse L. Steinfeld.
