RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, John "Jack" Schaller has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 92; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, John "Jack" Schaller was the loving and devoted husband of for 50 years of Betty, nee McCormick; and
WHEREAS, John "Jack" Schaller was the much-adored father of Jill, Sue, James, Colleen, Betty Jo, Kim, Jay and the late Jack, the grandfather of eighteen and the great-grandfather of six to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, A member of our "Greatest Generation," John "Jack" Schaller attended Leo High School and bravely served his country during World War II; and
WHEREAS, John "Jack" Schaller was wounded while serving as a mortar-man at the Battle of Leyte Gulf which was history's biggest sea skirmish; and
WHEREAS, John "Jack" Schaller met his future wife in the second grade while attending St. Sabina Grammar School in the Auburn-Gresham neighborhood; and
WHEREAS, John "Jack" Schaller was a famous fixture at Schaller's Pump, originally founded in Bridgeport in 1881 by his grandfather, George Schaller; and
WHEREAS, Known as a great storyteller, John "Jack" Schaller took over running the iconic saloon and restaurant in 1960 which has been frequented for generations by neighborhood patrons, White Sox fans and politicians; and
WHEREAS, In his leisure time, John "Jack" Schaller enjoyed following White Sox games, watching old war movies and listening to big band music; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of John "Jack" Schaller serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared John "Jack" Schaller to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, John "Jack" Schaller was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, John "Jack" Schaller imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-second day of June, 2016, do hereby commemorate John "Jack" Schaller for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
