RESOLUTION

 

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Joan Murphy has gone to her eternal reward at the age of 79; and

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Aldermen Edward M. Burke and Roberto Maldonado; and

 

WHEREAS, A longtime resident of Crestwood, the Honorable Joan Murphy was an elected official and the loving wife of the late Donald F. Sr; and

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Joan Murphy was the much-adored mother of Tricia, Tim, Tony and the late Donald F. Jr. and the grandmother of five to whom she imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that she possessed in abundance; and

 

WHEREAS, A native of Boston and the daughter of Concetta and the late Michael O'Malley Sr., the Honorable Joan Murphy devoted her life to the highest ideals of public service; and

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Joan Murphy began her trailblazing career in 1965 as the Village Clerk of Crestwood where she raised her family; and

 

WHEREAS, In 1977 the Honorable Joan Murphy was elected Clerk of Worth Township and in 1989 became Supervisor of Worth Township; and

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Joan Murphy was elected Cook County Commissioner representing the 6th District in 2002 and throughout her tenure advocated for a greater role for women in government; and

 

WHEREAS, As Cook County Commissioner, the Honorable Joan Murphy quietly and steadfastly helped innumerable constituents from her district office; and

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Joan Murphy was also a woman of great humor who liked to refer to her East Coast roots and joke that she was working on perfecting her "Cook County accent"; and

 

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Honorable Joan Murphy serve as an example to all; and

 

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Joan Murphy was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her many relatives, friends and admirers; and

 

WHEREAS, To her beloved family, the Honorable Joan Murphy imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this fifth day of October, 2016, do hereby commemorate the Honorable Joan Murphy for her grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to her family; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of the Honorable Joan Murphy.
