RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Sidney Epstein has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 92; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Sidney Epstein was a widely admired business leader and the loving husband of Sondra; and
WHEREAS, A native of Chicago's West Side Austin neighborhood, Sidney Epstein earned a degree in civil engineering from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana; and
WHEREAS, After serving his country in World War II, Sidney Epstein joined A. Epstein 85 Sons, a small structural engineering firm founded by his Russian immigrant father; and
WHEREAS, The company grew to become a global architectural and engineering concern and by the 1940s pioneered what is now known as the "design-build" concept; and
WHEREAS, The firm's many diverse projects ranged from the expansion of McCormick Place and the construction of runways at O'Hare International Airport to building Jewel supermarket warehouses and food processing plants; and
WHEREAS, Sidney Epstein oversaw the company alongside his brother, Raymond, as it prospered and opened offices located around the world; and
WHEREAS, Following a long and highly successful career, Sidney Epstein retired as Chairman of the Chicago-based company which eventually became known as Epstein; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Sidney Epstein serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Sidney Epstein to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, Sidney Epstein was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Sidney Epstein imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this sixteenth day of March, 2016, do hereby commemorate Sidney Epstein for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Sidney Epstein.
