CONGRATULATING THE MARX FAMILY ON THE 100th YEAR ANNIVERSARY
OF NEW WORLD VAN LINES
WHEREAS, on March 7th, 2019, The Marx family will gather together with their family of employees and many friends, at Chicago's Drake Hotel, to joyously celebrate their 100th year of business as New World Van Lines; and
WHEREAS, the Chicago City Council has been informed of this significant event by the Honorable Margaret Laurino, Alderman of the 39th Ward; and
WHEREAS, Michael Marx founded the family's moving company in 1919, as Economy Moving and Transfer, with one truck; a commitment to caring for people and their belongings; and, a steadfast determination to be the very best; and
WHEREAS, thirty-four years later, Edward M. Marx purchased Economy Moving from his father and, in 1982, after the moving industry was deregulated, went on to found New World Van Lines with his beloved wife, Shirley; and
WHEREAS, New World was granted authority to operate the company as a forty-eight state carrier; and in 1987, the Marx family established New World International, with the same dedication of serving customers' seamless relocation across the globe; and
WHEREAS, until his passing in 1995, Edward Marx oversaw the company's growth into one of the top fifteen household moving companies in the country; and
WHEREAS, after the loss of her dear husband, Shirley Marx, supported by her loving family, assumed responsibility for the company's leadership and now serves as New World Van Lines' Co-founder and Chairperson of the Board; and
WHEREAS, in 1999, as further demonstration of the New World Van Lines' commitment to be responsive to the needs of corporations and customers eager to support a diverse supply chain, earned the designation as a Women's Business Enterprise by the Women's Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC), the nation's largest third-party certifier of businesses owned and operated by women;
WHEREAS, currently, New World Van Lines continues its strong legacy of serving people well through its sixteen service center locations throughout United States and its regional offices in the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia-Pacific countries; and
WHEREAS, since its small beginnings in 1919, the Marx family has been on a continuing journey of perfecting the art and practice of moving; and
WHEREAS, in 2011, Shirley Marx received the Illinois Movers' and Warehousemen's Association Quality Service Award as a testament to its fine work serving those in need of moving services; and
WHEREAS, throughout its growth during the last century, the Marx family has stayed true to its core values of "Safety, Service, People, Profits, and Innovation" and continues to be a pillar in the industry for its commitment to corporate social responsibility and sustainable business practices; and
WHEREAS, New World Van Lines demonstrates its active corporate citizenship and charitable service in so many valuable ways, including its Actively Caring Together (ACT) initiative which holds as its mission: "To build upon the New World giving tradition, engaging all New World employees to address four areas of need, our giving pillars. These are: Food and Clothing, Health and Wellness, Education, and Support for our Armed Forces; and, to take action collectively and individually to make a positive impact on the world around us by giving our time, talents, and treasures"; and
WHEREAS, the success of New World Van Lines is clearly the result of the Marx family and the New World Van Lines company commitment to both people and business flourishing as one set of inextricably linked goals; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED, that we the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council on this thirteenth day of March, 2019, do hereby congratulate the Marx family and their employees on creating and sustaining the success of New World Van Lines for one hundred years, and wish them continued prosperity into the future; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a suitable copy of this resolution be given to the Marx family as a sign of our gratitude for their business and community contributions in Chicago, throughout the country, and the world.
